Link Building in the Era of AI

Link building in AI search: a glossary

Brand mention

What is Brand mention?

A brand mention is any reference to a brand on a third-party page, whether or not it carries a link.

Who uses the term Brand mention?

Brand mention and unlinked citation are used across SEO and digital PR, usually to argue that a mention has value even without a link.

The terms are also standard in media monitoring, where mentions are counted for reputation rather than for search.

A backlink is a mention that links. Under the model this book describes the link adds a route but not the evidence, which narrows the gap between the two considerably.

A citation in local SEO means a structured name, address and phone listing. A brand mention is unstructured prose. Both corroborate, differently.

The book treats any page naming you as testimony whether or not it links, and warns that a corroborating mention carrying contradicting details corroborates nothing and introduces doubt. Its test for a placement is whether the mention would still be valuable if links passed no authority at all.

Corroboration is the agreement between independent sources on the same claim about an entity, and it is what raises a retrieval system's confidence that the claim is true.
